City Welcomes Bazbeaux Pizza to Old Town
Bazbeaux Pizza will open a restaurant in Old Town Carmel's Arts & Design district. The new restaurant location will be on Main Street in the AMLI building, adjacent to the Monon Trail. Bazbeaux Pizza has been voted "Best Pizza in Indianapolis" since opening its first location on May 12, 1986 in Broad Ripple. Their second location, on Massachusetts Avenue, was one of the fir st businesses to locate in that area. Owners, Jeff and Deb Berman believed in the vision for the area, which helped to spur the growth and success of the Mass Ave district. "The City of Carmel is very excited to welcome Bazbeaux Pizza to Carmel's Arts & Design district. The restaurant has proven to be an asset to other cultural areas around Indianapolis, and Carmel is fortunate that Bazbeaux has chosen to locate here. They have enjoyed immense popularity at their other locations, and I am certain that they will realize the same successes here," said Mayor Jim Brainard.

Sanitary Sewer Rate Increases to Cover Inflationary Costs
A nine percent increase on sanitary sewer rates for Carmel Utilities Sanitary Sewer customers has recently been approved by Carmel City Council. This increase was issued to make up for increasing operational costs, such as insurance, and inflation. The increase will also help to pay for an $11 million bond issue for the Waste Water Plant for improvements and system expansion. Prior to the increase, the sanitary sewer rates were lower than the rates in 1982. Even after the rate changes, the Carmel Utilities Sanitary Sewer rates are still some of the lowest rates in the state.

City Receives $1.125 Million in Federal Funding
Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard received news earlier this week that President George Bush signed the surface transportation bill. The bill earmarked $1.125 million for improvements to Old Meridian Street in Carmel. The $1.125 million will be combined with a previous federal earmark of one million to reconstruct the road, widening it to four lanes between Pennsylvania Street and 136th Street. Roundabouts will be added to the Old Meridian Street intersections of 131st, Guilford and Pennsylvania. Bike paths and curbs will also be added to the roadway. In addition to the $2.125 million in federal highway funds, the City of Carmel has appropriated $5.4 million towards this project for a total of $7.5 million dollars. Mayor Jim Brainard said that he and his staff have worked for over two years to obtain this earmark in the transportation bill. "We need to do everything we can as a city to obtain the return of as much of this money to Carmel and Indiana as possible. Traditionally, Indiana has received only about 88 cents back on every dollar paid into this fund, and we have worked hard to increase that percentage," said Mayor Brainard. Construction on Old Meridian is expected to start in December, 2005. |
